While I am a firm believer that there are no bad blooms, just bad designers, some stars have such a disdain for certain innocent flowers their riders specify they must be kept out of their dressing rooms. Of course we all know about Madonna’s hatred of the hydrangea, but what are some of the favorite flowers of stars? Read More »

Thank You…two little words that are said not nearly enough. With Thanksgiving just days away, I thought what better time to address this issue. Perhaps it’s my Southern upbringing, but I am constantly surprised when kind gestures go unacknowledged. Read More »

Claude Chabrol, the late French New Wave filmmaker, once said “I love mirrors. They let one pass through the surface of things.” I agree. When light is reflected in mirrored surfaces, something magical happens. With major holidays before us (Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas), what better season to illuminate your table settings? Mirrored accessories in mercury glass are the perfect solution to achieve this effect. Read More »

Winter months are known to bring about depression called SAD (Seasonal Depression) or the winter blues. How do we get through these melancholy months of nesting and isolation unscathed? Just because the brutal temperatures force us inside does not mean we need to sacrifice our love of nature. Read More »

It’s officially fall! Sweaters, scarves, and hats are quickly being pulled from storage. It’s hard to believe that we just finalized our Halloween costumes and now Thanksgiving is only weeks away. For me, Thanksgiving is spent in New York City with my friends. My only dilemma each year is deciding how I want the table to look. Since tablescapes are my business, the pressure is intense. This week, I thought I would give you some tips to turn your bedroom into a romantic retreat. I turn to the practice of feng shui when designing a space, especially a bedroom. A bedroom should promote a harmonious flow of nourishing and sensual energy. It should invite you, lure you in, excite and calm all at the same time. And, as Jane Seymour once said, ‘If you want romance to come on strong, you have to come off soft.” Read More »

Breast cancer! Probably two of the scariest words ever put together. Hopefully, you have never heard them said to you by a physician, but someone you know and love unfortunately has. I am tickled pink to dedicate my blog this week to all those brave women who have found themselves in the eye of the storm. Ladies, I salute you! Read More »

The color orange evokes strong opinions. You either love it or hate it. Though I detest orange clothing, I love orange flowers. Orange flowers represent warmth & energy. Orange is also the color of the Sacral chakra which controls the sexual organs and reproductive system. In fall, orange is everywhere, so the challenge is how to take this color and make it chic… Read More »

Though the masses simply write off those attracted to the gothic world as mere rebellious teenagers, one cannot ignore the huge influence it has on modern culture. Television’s lineup is full of witches, vampires, and ghost hunting shows. It seems all of America has gone to the dark side. But no other modern day diva has embraced their inner goth girl more than Lady Gaga. Her recent photo spread for Out Magazine took the “Queen of Little Monsters” to the dark side by channeling her inner high priestess. Read More »

One of my favorite interactive activities at a party is mehndi. Mehndi is simply a henna paste applied to the skin… Read More »

Over the summer, many women finally heard those four words that they have waited their entire lives to hear, “Will you marry me?” Next comes the task of throwing an engagement party which can be tricky in this transitional season. Summer brights nor autumnal colors will do. But purple is perfect. Recently, I was asked to design the NYC launch party for Hpnotiq hosted by Khole Kardashian & purple ruled… Read More »

Recently during a news conference at the Venice Film Festival, Madonna accepted a stem of hydrangea from an adoring fan. Madonna said a polite thank you and immediately tucked the blue bloom underneath the dais then rolled her eyes and made a sour face to those on her left. Besides the ungrateful gesture, I found it odd that Madonna of all people would detest such a bloom. Actually, they have a lot in common. Read More »

Recently, Prudence Designs was hired to design a birthday party/fundraiser for one of my dear clients. For her birthday party, in lieu of gifts, she chose to make her birthday party a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s to honor her grandmother who suffered from this terrible disease. I must say, the thing that I love most about my clientele is their activism and social awareness; besides, once you’re over 21, how many scented candles do you need? Read More »

Japan is known for the art of Ikebana –the floral art form which loosely translates into “giving life to flowers” through arranging them. Shape, line, and form are emphasized using not only the blooms, but special attention to their stems as well. The one word that best describes the practice of Ikebana is restraint. Read More »
