When the Foo Fighters stepped up to accept their second of what would turn out to be five Grammy awards, a light went on for me. These guys are from a generation long past their music predecessors such as Jim Morrison and Steven Tyler, but half of them still wear the hair styles that were (and are) trademarks of these same artistic icons. There continues to be an allure regarding the long hair which many successful rock bands sport even today. Read More »

One of my clients and I were talking today about the idea that you can tell how a woman feels about herself by how she styles and wears her hair. If the eyes truly are the windows to the soul, then for women, their hair can be traced right to their heart. And somehow, I think men have a sixth sense about this because sexy, romantic hair can send a signal to your significant other that simply cannot be misinterpreted. Romantic hair accessories set the stage and create the mood, so let’s take a look at some romantic hairstyle ideas for Valentine’s Day. Read More »

I hear Madonna may have a case of nerves over her upcoming Super Bowl performance. I never considered that. I really thought that anyone who had done everything at least once in her life would have confidence. But I’m not the one with an audience in the millions, and when I really look closer, there is at least one thing that Madonna hasn’t ever done. She has never donned pastel hair, for any reason. I like to say that she was simply too smart. But that hasn’t stopped the trend from continuing on, regardless of my and Madonna’s opinion Read More »

Even though the concept style of Rockabilly has been around for decades in one incarnation or another, it’s finding its way back once again- riding the coattails of coiffed hair. And I must say that I like it, even though it’s so relatively new in its resurgence that very few of my clients have asked for it yet. But don’t be fooled. This truly Americana style is making another comeback. Read More »

In my experience, the first thing girls want to do when they have a break-up, a career change, or are simply having a fat day, is to cut their bangs. I don’t understand it, but I’ve gotten where I roll with it. And just so you know ladies, men have fat days too. And hot flashes. Anyway, back to bangs. They’re sexy, they’re cool, they’re in right now. Read More »

Who of us hasn’t wished at some point in our lives that our hair was different in some way; either lighter or darker, more body or more straight, or simply just more hair? And who of you hasn’t been discouraged at least once because of what was perceived to be the available styling options for your hair type? I think you would be hard pressed to find many, if any, who could answer these questions with the reply, “not me.” Thus was born the wig… Read More »

Hair styles for 2012 will be variations on a theme, ultimately borrowing from our most favorite styles of 2011 and putting a new spin on them; a fashion spin. In fact, if you take a look at how hair styles follow fashion trends you will see the direct correlation and influence of one upon the other. And whereas milestone changes in fashion really only occur about every decade or so, it’s no surprise that we’re still building on previous looks until the next grand revelation occurs. Here are my predictions for five hot hairstyles during 2012. Read More »

Mr. Blackwell. That’s a name that has been feared by the most prominent of Hollywood’s elite for decades, in hopes that they would (or would not) be included in his Best/Worst dressed list annually. She may not have had Bette Davis eyes, but she definitely defined for us an eternal hair style that so many borrow from today. When we look back at the hair fashion trends which Farah Fawcett influenced there is no question that she left her mark. What’s more though, she made a subtle statement that many may have missed at the time, but which others still value today. When you take a look at those who are using Farrah’s basic styling techniques, it’s obvious that two things continue to play a significant role in today’s celeb fashions; Farrah’s permanent influence, and… Read More »

Blondes have more fun, or so we’ve been led to believe. But never count out a woman’s desire for change. And when that fervor sets in, there’s often no limit on what a woman might try in order to satisfy that craving. So, we find ourselves with a trend of women going from blonde to brunette, instead of the historical reversal of that process. In turn, this begs the question as to why the change, and will this be right for you? Read More »

Big hair. It sounds like a Broadway play these days more than it does a real style option for the hip and trendy, but don’t count it out yet, because big hair may be in your future. How do you recognize big hair when you see it? Andrea Valdez writes in Texas Monthly that the style which big hair symbolizes “is powerful yet elegant, bold but surprisingly down-home.” However, as a professional stylist who is also from the great state of Texas, I have a different attitude regarding what passes as big hair. Distinguished. Prominent. Wise. Those are just a few of the words that women hear and use when describing that handsome, debonair, older gentleman who just caught their attention. But what do you say about women with that same silver (gray) hair? We often don’t say anything, for we think to ourselves, there goes myself if I don’t continue to color my gray away! But, I think it’s high time we embrace our natural beauty without hesitation and without regret. In fact, the latest head turning color for women is gray… Read More »
